The NYU Journal of International Law and Politics and PluriCourts: Centre of Excellence at the Faculty of Law of the University of Oslo, along with the NYU Institute for International Law and Justice, the NYU International Law Society, and the NYU International Arbitration Association cordially invite you to the Nineteenth Annual Herbert Rubin and Justice Rose Luttan Rubin International Law Symposium, entitled “The Function of Judges and Arbitrators in International Law.” The invited speakers will represent a variety of viewpoints and areas of scholarship within international law, such as human rights, commercial arbitration, trade, and international criminal law.
This Symposium will examine the increasingly vital role international adjudicators play within international judicial or arbitral bodies and the larger international system, and the differing viewpoints as to what precisely their functions are. This topic raises timely and fascinating issues, and in three panels, the Symposium will address (1) competing theories of how adjudicators view their role within the international system; (2) cross-judging and whether international adjudicatory bodies are in dialogue with one another; and (3) the role of international arbitrators as dispute settlers or lawmakers. A conversation about the future of international courts and tribunals will follow the panel discussions.
The agenda for the symposium is available here.
The Journal would like to thank Professor Jose Alvarez for his generous help in organizing this exciting event.
CLE credits will be offered. Click here to register.
